एक बार नारद जी को यह अभिमान हो गया कि उसने बढ़कर इस पृथ्वी पर कोई दूसरा भगवान विष्णु का भक्त नहीं है।उनका व्यवहार भी इस भावना से प्रेरित होकर कुछ बदलने लगा। वे भगवान के गुणों का गान करने के साथ-साथ अपने सेवा कार्यों का भी वर्णन करने लगे। भगवान से कोई बात छुपी थोड़े ही रहती है।
उन्हें तुरंत इस बात का पता चल गया। वे अपने भक्त का पतन भला कैसे देख सकते थे ?
इसलिए उन्होंने नारद को इस दुष्प्रवृति से बचाने का निर्णय किया। एक दिन नारद जी और भगवान विष्णु साथ-साथ वन में जा रहे थे अचानक विष्णु जी एक वृक्ष के नीचे थककर बैठ गए और बोले - भई नारद जी, हम तो थक गए है, प्यास भी लगी है। कहीं से पानी मिल जाए तो लाओ। हमसे तो प्यास के मारे चला नहीं जा रहा है। हमारा गला सुख रहा है।
यह सुनकर नारद जी तुरंत सावधान हो गए, उनके होते हुए भगवान भला प्यासे रहें। वे बोले भगवान अभी लाया आप थोड़ी देर प्रतीक्षा करें। नारद जी एक ओर दौड़ लिए। उनके जाते ही भगवान मुस्कराए और अपनी माया को नारद जी को सत्य के मार्ग पर लाने का आदेश दिया। माया शुरू हो गई।
नारद जी थोड़ी ही दूर गए होंगे कि उन्हें एक गाँव दिखाई पड़ा, जिसके बाहर कुँए पर कुछ युवा स्त्रियां पानी भर रही थी। कुँए के पास जब वे पहुंचे तो एक कन्या को देखकर अपनी सुध-बुध खो बैठे, बस उसे ही निहारने लगे। वह यह भूल गए कि भगवान के लिए पानी लेने आए थे। कन्या भी नारद जी की भावना समझ गई। वह जल्दी-जल्दी जल से घड़ा भरकर अपनी सहेलियों को पीछे छोड़कर घर की ओर लपकी।
नारद जी भी उसके पीछे जो लिए। कन्या तो घर के अंदर चली गई लेकिन नारद जी ने द्वार पर खड़े होकर नारायण, नारायण का अलख जगाया। गृहस्वामी नारायण का नाम सुनकर बाहर आया। उसने नारद जी को तुरंत पहचान लिया। अत्यंत विनम्रता और आदर के साथ वह नारद जी को घर के अंदर ले गया और उनके हाथ-पैर धोकर स्वच्छ आसन पर बिठाया तथा उनकी सेवा-सत्कार में कोई कमी न छोड़ी।
उनके आगमन से अपने को धन्य बताते हुए गृहस्वामी ने अपने योग्य सेवा के लिए आग्रह किया। नारद जी बोले - आपके घर में जो आपकी कन्या जल का घरा लेकर अभी-अभी आई है, मैं उससे विवाह करना चाहता हूँ। नारद जी की बात सुनकर गृहस्वामी एकदम चकित रह गया लेकिन उसे प्रसन्नता भी हुई कि मेरी कन्या एक ऐसे महान योगी तथा संत के पास जाएगी। उसने स्वीकृति प्रदान कर दी और नारद जी को अपने ही घर में रख लिया।
दो-चार दिन पश्चात शुभ-मुहूर्त में उसने अपनी कन्या का विवाह नारद जी के साथ कर दिया तथा उन्हें गाँव में ही उतनी धरती का टुकड़ा दे दिया खेती करके वे आराम से अपना और अपने परिवार का पेट भर सकें। अब नारद जी की विणा एक खूंटी पर तंगी रहती, जिसकी ओर उनका ध्यान बहुत कम जाता। अपनी पत्नी के आगे नारायण को वे भूल गए।
दिन भर खेती में लगे रहते। कभी हल चलाते, कभी पानी देते, कभी बीज बोते, तो कभी निराई-गुड़ाई करते। जैसे-जैसे पौधे बढ़ते उनकी प्रसन्नता का पारावार न रहता। फसलें हर वर्ष पकतीं, कटतीं, अनाज से उनके कोठार भर जाते। नारद जी गाँव के एक सम्पन्न किसान माने जाने लगे।
वर्ष दर वर्ष बीतते चले गए और नारद जी की गृहस्ती भी बढ़ती चली गई। तीन-चार लड़के-लड़कियां भी हो गए। अब नारद जी को एक क्षण की भी फुरसत नहीं मिलती थी। वे हर समय बच्चों के पालन-पोषण तथा पढ़ाई-लिखाई में लगे रहते अथवा खेत में काम करते रहते थे।
अचानक एक बार तेज बारिश हुई। जिसने की दिनों तक बंद होने का नाम ही नहीं लिया। बादलों की गरज और बिजली की कड़क ने सबके हृदय में भय उत्पन्न कर दिया। मूसलाधार वर्षा ने गाँव के पास बहने वाली नदी में बाढ़ की स्थिति पैदा कर दी।
चारों ओर पानी ही पानी फैला गया। कच्चे-पक्के सभी मकान ढ़हने लगे। घर का सामान बह गया। पशु भी डूब गए। उनके व्यक्ति मर गए। गाँव में त्राहि-त्राहि मच गयी। नारद अब क्या करें ? उन्होंने भी घर में जो थोड़ा कीमती सामान बचा था उसकी गठरी बाँधी और अपनी पत्नी तथा बच्चों को लेकर जान बचाने के लिए पानी में से होते हुए बाहर निकलने लगे।
नारद जी बगल में गठरी थामें, एक हाथ से एक बच्चे को पकड़े और दूसरे हाथ से अपनी पत्नी को संभाले हुए थे। पत्नी भी एक बच्चे को गॉड में और एक का हाथ पकड़े धीरे-धीरे आगे बढ़ने लगी। पानी का बहाव अत्यंत तेज था तथा यह भी पता नहीं चलता था कि कहाँ गड्ढा है और कहाँ टीला ? अचानक नारद जी ने ठोकर खायी और गठरी बगल से निकल कर बह गयी।
नारद जी गठरी कैसे पकड़ते, दोनों हाथ तो घिरे थे। मन मसोसकर सोचा फिर कमा लेंगे। कुछ दूर जाने पर पत्नी एक गड्ढे में गिर पड़ी और गोद का बच्चा छूटकर बह गया। पत्नी बहुत रोयी, लेकिन क्या हो सकता था ?
धीरे-धीरे और दो बच्चे भी पानी में बह गए, उन्होंने बहुत कोशिश की बचाने की, लेकिन कुछ न हो सका। दोनों पति-पत्नी बड़े दुखी, रोते, कलपते, एक दूसरे को सांत्वना देते कोई ऊँची जगह ढूंढते रहे। एक जगह आगे चलकर दोनों एक गड्ढे में समा गए।
नारद जी तो किसी प्रकार गड्ढे में से निकल आए, मगर उनकी पत्नी का पता कहीं नहीं चला। बहुत देर तक नारद जी उसे इधर-उधर, दूर-दूर तक ढूंढते रहे लेकिन व्यर्थ रोते-रट उनका बुरा हाल था, हृदय पत्नी और बच्चों को याद कर करके फटा जा रहा था। उनकी तो साडी गृहस्थी उजड़ गई थी। बेचारे क्या करें, किसे कोंसे अपने भाग्य को या भगवान को ?
भगवान का ध्यान आते ही नारद जी के मस्तिष्क में प्रकाश फ़ैल गया और पुरानी सारी बातें याद आ गयीं। वे किस लिए आए थे और कहाँ आ गए ?
ओहो! भगवान विष्णु तो उनकी प्रतीक्षा कर रहे होंगे। वे तो उनके लिए जल लेने आए थे और यहां गृहस्थी बसाकर बैठ गए।
वर्षों बीत गए, गृहस्थी को बसने में और फिर सब नष्ट हो गया। क्या भगवान अब भी मेरी प्रतीक्षा में उसी वृक्ष के नीचे बैठे होंगे ?
यह सोचते ही बाढ़ नदारद हो गयी। गाँव अंतर्धान हो गया। वे तो घने वन में खड़े थे। नारद जी पछताते और शर्माते हुए दौड़े, देखा कुछ ही दूर पर उसी वृक्ष के निचे भगवान लेटे हैं। नारद जी को देखते ही उठ बैठे और बोले - अरे भाई नारद, कहा चले गए थे, बड़ी देर लगा दी। पानी लाए या नहीं।
नारद जी भगवान के चरण पकड़ कर बैठ गए और लगे अश्रु बहाने। उनके मुहं से एक बोल भी नहीं फूटा। भगवान मुस्कराए और बोले - तुम अभी तो गए थे। कुछ अधिक देर थोड़े ही हुई है। लेकिन नारद जी को लगा था कि वर्षों बीत गए। अब उनकी समझ में आया यह सब भगवान की माया थी, जो उनके अभिमान को चूर-चूर करने के लिए पैदा हुई थी।
वे सोचने लगे, उन्हें बड़ा घमंड था कि उनसे बढ़कर त्रिलोक में दूसरा कोई भक्त नहीं है। लेकिन एक स्त्री को देखकर वे भगवान को भूल गए, उसको पछतावा होने लगा और उनका घमंड जरा-सी देर में ढेर हो गया। वे पुनः सरलता और विनय के साथ भगवान के गुण गाने लगे।

Once Narad ji became proud that there was no other devotee of Lord Vishnu on this earth than him. Inspired by this feeling, his behavior also started changing. Along with singing the praises of God, he also started describing his service activities. Nothing remains hidden from God.
He came to know about this immediately. How could he see the downfall of his devotee?
Therefore he decided to save Narad from this evil tendency. One day Narad ji and Lord Vishnu were going together in the forest, suddenly Vishnu ji sat down tired under a tree and said - Brother Narad ji, we are tired and thirsty too. If you get water from somewhere, bring it. We are unable to walk due to thirst. Our throat is feeling dry.
Hearing this, Narad ji immediately became alert, may God remain thirsty in his presence. He said, God, I have just brought it, you wait for a while. Narad ji ran aside. As soon as he left, God smiled and ordered his Maya to bring Narad ji on the path of truth. Maya has started.
Narad ji had gone a short distance when he saw a village, outside which some young women were drawing water from a well. When he reached near the well, he lost his senses after seeing a girl and started just staring at her. He forgot that he had come to collect water for God. The girl also understood Narad jis feelings. She quickly filled the pitcher with water and ran towards home, leaving her friends behind.
Narad ji also followed him. The girl went inside the house but Narad ji stood at the door and awakened the light of Narayan, Narayan. The householder came out after hearing the name of Narayan. He immediately recognized Narad ji. With utmost humility and respect, he took Narad ji inside the house, washed his hands and feet and made him sit on a clean seat and left no stone unturned in serving him.
Describing himself as blessed by his arrival, the householder requested for his worthy service. Narad ji said - I want to marry your daughter who has just come to your house with a pot of water. The householder was astonished to hear Narad jis words but he was also happy that his daughter would go to such a great yogi and saint. He gave approval and kept Narad ji in his own house.
After two-four days, at an auspicious time, he married his daughter to Narad ji and gave him that much piece of land in the village itself so that he could comfortably feed himself and his family through farming. Now Narad jis veena remained tied to a peg, towards which he paid very little attention. He forgot Narayan in front of his wife.
Would remain engaged in farming the whole day. Sometimes he would plough, sometimes he would water, sometimes he would sow seeds, and sometimes he would do weeding. As the plants grew, their happiness knew no bounds. Every year the crops would ripen and be harvested, their granaries would be filled with grains. Narad ji started being considered a prosperous farmer of the village.
Years passed by and Narad jis household also kept increasing. There were also three-four boys and girls. Now Narad ji did not get even a moments leisure. They were always engaged in the upbringing and education of their children or working in the fields.
Suddenly it rained heavily. Which showed no signs of closing for days. The thunder and lightning created fear in everyones heart. The torrential rains created flooding in the river flowing near the village.
Water spread everywhere. All the houses, whether raw or constructed, started collapsing. Household items were washed away. The animals also drowned. Their men died. There was panic in the village. Narad what to do now? He also bundled the little valuables left in the house and started wading through the water along with his wife and children to save their lives.
Narad ji was holding a bundle next to him, holding a child with one hand and his wife with the other hand. The wife also started moving forward slowly, holding one child in her arms and the other ones hand. The flow of water was very fast and it was not even known where there was a pit and where a mound. Suddenly Narad ji stumbled and the bundle went out from his side and was swept away.
How could Narad ji hold the bundle, both his hands were busy. Thought deeply, then we will earn. After going some distance, the wife fell into a pit and the child in her lap was lost and washed away. The wife cried a lot, but what could have happened?
Gradually two more children also got swept away in the water, they tried hard to save themselves, but nothing could be done. Both the husband and wife were very sad, crying, sobbing, consoling each other and kept looking for a higher place. After walking further, both of them fell into a pit.
Narad ji somehow came out of the pit, but his wife was nowhere to be found. For a long time Narad ji kept searching for him here and there, but in vain, he was in a bad condition and crying, his heart was breaking remembering his wife and children. His entire household was destroyed. What should the poor guy do, whom should he blame, his fate or God?
As soon as God came to his mind, light spread in Narad jis mind and he remembered all the old things. Why did they come and where did they come?
Ooh! Lord Vishnu must be waiting for him. They had come to fetch water for them and settled here after setting up a household.
Years passed, the household got settled and then everything was destroyed. Would God still be sitting under the same tree waiting for me?
As soon as he thought this, the flood disappeared. The village was destroyed. They were standing in a dense forest. Narad ji ran regretting and feeling shy and saw God lying under the same tree at a distance. As soon as he saw Narad ji, he sat up and said - Hey brother Narad, where did you go, you took a long time. Should I bring water or not?
Narad ji sat down holding the feet of God and started shedding tears. Not even a single word came out of his mouth. God smiled and said – You had just gone. Its not too late. But Narad ji felt that years had passed. Now he understood that all this was Gods illusion, which was born to shatter his pride.
He started thinking, he was very proud that there was no other devotee in the world greater than him. But after seeing a woman, he forgot God, he started feeling remorse and his pride collapsed in a short time. He again started singing the praises of God with simplicity and humility. |
